Still Listening: This Can’t Be Life

October 24, 2015

Today’s featured Still Listening song is “This Can’t Be Life” by Jay Z. Hate rap? Don’t discount this one out of hand, as it’s one of the few songs out there that directly addresses stillbirth and the death of a child. “Wait, it gets worse /  Baby momma water burst / Baby came out stillborn / Still I gotta move on / Though my heart still torn / Life gone from her womb / Don’t worry / If it was meant to be / It’ll be, soon.” And, “I got phone call from one of my [friends] / Said my homeboy Rease / He just lost one of his kids / and when I heard that / I just broke into tears / And see in the second-hand / You don’t really know how it is / But when it hits that close to home / You feel the pain at the crib/ So I called mine / And saddened my wife with the bad news / Now we both depressed / Countin’ our blessings ’cause Brad’s two / Prayin’ for young souls / To laugh at life through the stars / Lovin’ your kids / just like you was ours /And I’m hurtin’ for you dog / but ain’t nobody pain is like yours.”

Unfortunately, there are no YouTube versions of this song available (and the one that pops up first looks like it, but isn’t); but here’s the Spotify link to the track.

“To Where You Are” by Josh Groban, his first album.track #5:
“Who can say for certain? Maybe you’re still here. I feel you all around me, your memory’s so clear. Deep in the stillness, I can hear you speak, you’re still an an inspiration..can it be? That you are my forever love, and you are watching over me from up above?
Fly me up to where you are beyond a distant star I wish up tonight to see you smile, if only for awhile to know to know your there, a breath away is not far from where you are.
Are you gently seeping here inside my dream, and isn’t faith believing all power can’t be seen? As my heart holds you just one beat away, I cherish all you gave me everyday..and I believe that angles grieve, and that love will go on and never leave. I know you’re there”……………………(Jason )
